Super Heroes and Super Villains

Super Heroes and Super Villains is a 2 - 3 week lesson plan, that can be a refreshing change for students. Currently "Iron Man" is all the rage here with the release of Iron Man 3 at the cinema's...but in all honesty, I didn't realise just how popular superheroes are with middle school students. The girls love the handsome actors and the boys love the action. I wrote up this following lesson plan as a guide, but haven't stuck to it rigidly. You will see in the lesson plan below that because some of my current 12 classes have up to 60 students in them, I had to run this lesson in groups... which really isn't ideal, but still workable. I suggest if at all possible to do this as an individual or pairs activity. "Oh I wish I had that   luxury"! I never balk at spending a little of my hard earned cash back into my lessons, and I purchased some large sized art paper, to be used as the final product in the 2nd week of the activity (another reason I had to work in groups). For the first week whilst the students did the draft work, I asked the school to supply just normal A4 sheets of paper to hand around for the kids to work on. The above picture is a finished product of what each group, pair or individual should end up with at the end of the 2nd weeks lesson. One new super hero and super villain, their names, what is special that each of them can do (their super power) and a little story about why they fight each other. At the beginning of the lesson I showed the students pictures of superheroes and we identified them in English, then I ran the music video of Aqua's cartoon heroes song (but with footage of different superhero movies on it). I have included this at the end of this post. If any of you need a little help on remembering "who is who" within the super heroes and super villains world, I wrote this article... Which Superhero Is Best? Marvel vs DC. For classes that are middle school age and up the whole debate about Marvel superheroes vs DC superheroes is another useful extra topic of conversation that you can incorporate within the lesson.

Title: Super heroes And Super Villains Lesson  Keywords: The super heroes and super villains  keywords we will study are: Cape, Superpowers, Alias, Costume, Invisible, Fly, Climb, Jump, Stretch, Good and Evil Objective: To be able to say words to describe a super hero and villain including actions words and come up with a group collaborated piece of art, getting them to work together and think of new ideas. Show some examples of superheroes with pictures and go over the vocabulary. Show superhero Aqua video Activity: Split class into 6 groups. Each group must have different people allocated to each task of 1. Writing about the super hero 2. Writing about the villain 3. Writing the story 4. Doing the artwork At the end of the second week, get each group to present their superhero and villain to the class showing their final picture. Resources: The Superheroes  resources we will need are 1. Box of coloured crayons or pencils for each group 2. Two plain pencils for each group 3. Sharpener and eraser 4. Paper And on USB drive... 5. Aqua's "Cartoon Superhero" video with superhero film footage 6. Pictures of superheroes and villains Links: The links for original Superheroes lesson idea are: www.eatyourkimichi.com/create-a-superhero/ Additional Info: Additional information and notes about the lesson: this lesson needs to be split into two classes...  so do the groundwork, set up and information, get them to do the writing and drawing as draft ideas for week 1 (explain week 1 = draft ideas) in Chinese draft is cao3gao3. Week 2 = get them to transfer their draft ideas and information onto a poster sized piece of paper and introduce to the class.

Note: I tried to fit this lesson into two weeks but the kids got really involved and I had to spread it out to three.

Here are two different video's showing footage of superheroes and supervillains backed by Aqua's Cartoon Heroes song
